Meleyingyi dance is associated with Meleyingyi festival, the most important festival of the
Zeliangrong people of
Nagaland. The festival is held to herald spring and prayers are offered to God during the celebration. On the last day of the festival, groups of singing and dancing girls approach the young men and ask them to join in the dance. This romantic dance is called the butterfly dance.
