Mastiah Dance

A Traditional Dance

Mastiah is a traditional dance of Meghalaya. It is performed during religious ceremonies. The dance involves two men who tilt and step out in a rhythmic fashion. They hold a sword and a ‘sympiah,’ a traditional brush, and show various gestures while dancing. They move fast in a chasing style. At the end of the performance they come closer and bow to each other thrice, holding their swords in a lower position.
