Situated at an altitude of 731 m above mean sea level, Markonahalli Reservoir in
Kunigal is an old irrigation reservoir built on the river Shimsha in the year 1939. The dam consists of a 139 m sandstone structure and a pair of earth dams on either side extending to 1470 m.
Kunigal is around 75 km to the north east of the capital city Bangalore.
