Marakanam




Marakanam is a small fishing village in Viluppuram District of Tamil Nadu. In the early Sangam period (that dates back to 300 BC), the place served as an ancient sea port on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. This seaport is mentioned in the Sangam literatures.

Bhoomeeshwaraswamy temple is located here. Marakanam Beach is the main attraction. The beach at Pondicherry extends up to Marakanam. Auroville, Ousteri Lake and Kaliveli Lake are on the way to Pondicherry.

Marakanam is around 40 km north of Pondicherry and 30 km east of Tindivanam. Alattur, Chunampettai and Kalapettai are nearby. Tindivanam Railway Station is a nearby rail access point. Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport.
