Mandla Fort is a late 17th century fortress that stands by the banks of the
Narmada River, on the outskirts of
Mandla in
Madhya Pradesh. Built by the Gond Kings, it lies strategically in a loop of the Narmada River so that the river forms its defense from three sides. A ditch serves the purpose in the front. Mandla Fort is around 95 km to the south-east of
Jabalpur.
Due to age and neglect, the fort is fast dilapidating and is being encroached upon by the jungle – only a few towers had withstood the vagaries of time and nature, which can be seen standing amid the ruins.
The stretch of temples lining the Narmada River near Mandla and Ramnagar Fort (15 km) are the other historic sites near Mandla Fort.
