India | Jharkhand | Dumka

Dotted with temples, Maluti lies near Shikaripara in Dumka District of Jharkhand. It is a place of historical importance and a distinct feature is that a temple can be seen in the neighborhood of each house.

Majority of these temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the rest to gods and goddesses such as Vishnu and Durga. Most of the temples belong to the late medieval age.

The Shiva temples are built in Shikara style and the temple of Goddess Maulisha is in Bengali style, which contains two rooms with a verandah. The temples, in general, are made of burnt bricks and lime mortars, and items such as terracotta plates are used to decorate them.

The decorations depict scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, the famous battle of Durga and Mahishasura, and the daily life of the people who lived during the same period.
