Mahendragiri




MMahendragiri is located at Paralakhemundi, about 125 km from Berhampur, in Gajapati District, in Orissa. It is situated at an altitude of 1,525 m above sea level amid ever green forests. Archeological remains found here makes it a favorite spot for the scholars.

Mahendragiri is associated with the mythological stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata and finds a special mention in the poetic works of Kalidasa. There are temples of Yudishtira, Bhim and Kunti. Situated on top of the hill is the 6th century temple, one of the oldest temples dedicated to Gokarneswar Shiva in the state. Mahashivaratri is the major festival celebrated here with much religious fervor. Mahendra Tanaya River flows below the hill.

Trekking the mountain trails of Mahendragiri hill is a memorable experience.
