Mahamrityunjaya Temple is a highly revered shrine in Varanasi

, in the form of Mrityunjaya, is the presiding deity here. It is believed that by worshipping Shiva one can win over his death. A large number of devotees come here for performing Mahamritunjay-path - a ritual to dispel all kinds of fears and diseases.
The center of attraction is a well within the temple premises. According to legends, Dhanwanthari, the father of Ayurveda, poured all his Jari-booty (literally meaning medicine) in this well. Hence, the water of this well is considered sacred and a large number of devotees come here to drink it.
