Mahalingeshwara Temple




Mahalingeshwara Temple, on the south side of the Gokak Waterfalls, is an important antiquated river-front temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is locally called as Takakeshwara Temple. This temple is a large structure built in the Chalukya style of architecture. It has a Garbh Griha, ardhamandapa and a spacious Mukhamandapa. The sanctum has a ground plan with a tall shikhara with exquisite carvings depicting certain sketches from the Hindu mythology. The temples of Lord Dattatreya, Lord Muruga, Mallikarjuna and Kadsiddheshwara are also found here.

Gokak is 65 km by road from Belgaum and is well connected by public transport. Ghataprabha Railway Station near Gokak is the nearest railhead.
