Mag Tribe




Mag (Mogs or Maghs) is a tribal group of Tripura. It is a mixed tribe with characteristics of Arakaness, Burmese and Chinese groups. The word Mag is said to have originated from Magadh of Bihar state. The actual native land of the Mag tribe is not yet known. But the Mag groups of Sabroom or Belonia sub-divisions are said to have drifted from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

Superstitious by nature, they believe the cause of illness as the effect of evil spirits. Various food items are offered to appease these spirits. The Mags are mainly followers of Buddhism. One of the most important festivals celebrated is the Sangrai. As part of the celebration various cultural programs are conducted. Water will be poured on the roots of a tree called Bodhi Briksha. The Boat festival, Water festival, Byuhachakra Festival are the other important occasions. Besides these, there are other festivals associated with the worship of Lord Buddha.
