Lois is a tribal group inhabiting the valleys of Manipur
. The word 'Lois' means 'slaves or dependent'. Lois is also known by different names such as Singmei, Undro and Chairel. Each of them speaks different dialects, but with a considerable mixture of Manipuri
The community members manage their livelihood from agriculture, trading and iron-smelting. Their cultural life has some similarity with that of the Meiteis. Lois tribes also celebrate Lai-Haraoba festival according to their own customs.
Though they are of Mongoloid stock, the tribe members have some resemblance with the Aryans. Lois follows a religion close to the old Shaiva sect of Hinduism. They believe in animism and respect fire.
