Lois Tribe

Lois is a tribal group inhabiting the valleys of Manipur. The word 'Lois' means 'slaves or dependent'. Lois is also known by different names such as Singmei, Undro and Chairel. Each of them speaks different dialects, but with a considerable mixture of Manipuri words.

The community members manage their livelihood from agriculture, trading and iron-smelting. Their cultural life has some similarity with that of the Meiteis. Lois tribes also celebrate Lai-Haraoba festival according to their own customs.

Though they are of Mongoloid stock, the tribe members have some resemblance with the Aryans. Lois follows a religion close to the old Shaiva sect of Hinduism. They believe in animism and respect fire.
