Laxmi Vilas Palace is one of the major landmarks in Vadodara
. This imposing building, designed in Indo-Saracenic style, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao III. The palace, situated in 720 acres of land, is still the residence of the royal family.
The interiors of the palace are very attractive in their profusion of Carara marble, Venetian mosaic, stained glass, porcelain and other decoration. A huge portico leads one to an impressive staircase, and upstairs are the Maharajah’s apartments. Its ornate Darbar Hall has an Italian mosaic floor and walls with mosaic decorations. Laxmi Vilas Palace preserves a fabulous collection of old armory and sculptures in bronze, marble and terracotta.
Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, located on the palace grounds, showcases the royal collection of paintings, sculptures and other objects of arts.
Vadodara Junction Railway Station, on the Anand-Valsad rail route, is the nearest railhead.
