Lata Mangeshkar

The Queen of Indian Melody



Latabai Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, at Sikh Mohalla, Indore. Her father was a classical singer and stage actor, who came from Mangeshi in Goa. Her father’s name is Deenanath Mangeshkar and mother Shudhhamati. At the age of 12, Lata started showing her talents in the field of music.

Her first playback was in 1942 in the Marathi film Kitti Haasal. 'Paa laagu kar jori...' in the film Aapki Sewa Mein was her first song in Hindi. The film Andaaz was a turning point in her career. There was no looking back for her after her performance in the film. Her first major break was in 1948 in the film Majboor. She had also produced several films in Hindi and Marathi.

Lata Mangeshkar has an undescribable, unsoiled purity in her voice. Royal Albert Hall, London, recorded that her voice is the 'most perfect' in the world. Awards and honors heaped on her. Filmfare Awards, National Awards, Maharashtra State Award, Bengal Film Journalist's Association Award, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award by IIFA in London are a few to mention.

The Union Government honored her with Padmabhushan, Padmavibhushan, and Bharat Ratna. She got into the Guinness Book of World Records for singing the maximum number of songs in the world.
