La Martiniere




La Martiniere stands out among the numerous monuments that adorn the city of Lucknow due to its architectural style. A classic example of European funerary monument in the country, the construction of the building was started by Claude Martin, a French Major, who joined the East India Company after he was captured in Pondicherry.

La Martiniere is a magnificent structure showing traits of Gothic style of architecture. Claude Martin could not complete it during his lifetime and was buried in the basement of the building. A huge gun is placed in front of the building.
