Kutchikaam

Kutchikaam is a unique engraving technique native to Kutch District of Gujarat. It is used in decorating silverware.

Silver is first molded into the desired shape and then filled with wax. Designs are then engraved on its surface using a nail and hammer. The silverware is then heated to remove the wax. Fresh wax is again poured into the article and more designs are added. The process continues until the desired design is produced.

This technique is used in making bowls for sandalwood paste, flower baskets, perfume containers, decorative boxes and other similar articles. Silverware articles made from this technique are often used in religious ceremonies and functions.
