Kumaoni Tribe resides in the foothills of the central
Himalayas, in the states of
Uttar Pradesh and
Uttaranchal. They are the descendants of the Dravidian people who married Aryan 'barbarian' women. Kumaoni is the language spoken. Agriculture and timber trade are their main occupations. Their huts are made of mud-brick with thatched roofs. Kumaonis permit marriages within their own castes. They believe in animism (the belief of non-human objects and spirits). These tribes also engage in dance and music.
