Founded by Shri La Sri Muthuramalinga Gnanadesikar, popularly known as Andavar of Koviloor, the math has a vibrant history of about 200 years. It was the first school of systematic Vedantic studies in Tamil and the math was the first to translate 14 Vedanta texts, which include Vedanta Cudamani, Viveka Cudamani, Pancadasi, Bagavadgita and Jnanavasishta, into Tamil.

The math offers Vedanta course for all irrespective of their racial and financial status. The Vedanta teachings are organized in a similar manner as university syllabus and are set in 16 books.
