Kottankulangara Chamaya Vilakku

A festival of lighted lamps

Kottankulangara Chamaya Vilakku is a festival of lighted lamps, celebrated at the Kottankulangara Temple in Chavara. It is usually held in the month of March.

During the festival, hundreds of men dress up as comely females. This is an offering to Goddess Bhagavati, the presiding deity of the temple.

An important ritual that takes place is the Chamaya Vilakku (make-up lamp). At night, the unmarried women come to the temple, in a long procession, with lighted lamps in their hands.
