Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient shrine situated at
Koteshwar, about 8 km from
Ambaji, in
Banaskantha District. It is situated near the source of the Saraswati River. The temple enshrines
Lord Shiva as the presiding deity.
Legend has it that the ashram of Maharshi Valmiki, the composer of the great epic Ramayana, was situated near the temple.
There is a holy kund (tank) attached with the temple. The temple was renovated by King of Mevad, Maha Rana Pratap. It is also said that Nana Saheb Peshwa, a renowned freedom fighter, had resided in the cave of this temple during the mutiny of independence in 1857.
Abu Road Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
