Koorkancherry Thypooya Mahotsav

Koorkancherry Thypooya Mahotsav also known as Thaipooya Kavadiyattam is celebrated at Sree Maheswara Temple in Koorkancherry, 2 km away from Thrissur. It is an annual seven day festival which paints Koorkancherry town in a riot of colors. During the pooram day, the devotees wake up at four o'clock in the morning and praise god with devotional rites. Afterwards, a huge procession taken out by the devotees, carrying the exotic kavadi on their shoulders, streams into the temple courtyard. The devotees then dance with the kavadis which is continued until late afternoon.

This is pursued by the ceremonial procession of the deity accompanied by majestically caparisoned elephants. The Sree Maheswara Temple also conducts folk arts such as karakkattom and mayilattam in the temple premises in the evenings.

Cochin International Airport, located 58 km from Thrissur, is the nearest airport. The closest railway station is Thrissur Railway Station. Local attractions include Vadakkunnathan Temple, Archeological Museum and Thrissur Zoo.
