Kizhithirummu

Kizhithirummu is a unique method of massage prescribed in Ayurveda for the cure of osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. The process involves the application of Kizhi - a cloth bag packed with specially made herbs and leaves. The Kizhi is soused in thailam (medicated oil); the temperature of which is determined according to the physique of the patient. The Kizhi is then applied at the point of pain and swelling, with a certain amount of pressure. Kizhithirummu is also advisable to treat age old bruises and disorders. The treatment has to be done for 45 minutes per day for a period of 7 to 14 days.

Njavarakizhi is a type of Kizhi, in which the whole body is rubbed with Njavara -a kind of paddy having medicinal properties. Njavara is boiled in kashayam (medicinal decoction) and the kizhi is made with this boiled Njavara rice. This kizhi is then dipped in a mixture of milk and medicinal decoction and is applied all over the body. It is meant to stimulate the nerves and to strengthen the muscles. This treatment is good for patients with rheumatism, pain in the joints, emaciation of limbs, cholesterol and certain kinds of skin disease.
