Kiltan




Kiltan, an inhabited island of Lakshadweep, is situated at 11°29' north and 73°00' east longitude. It is about 50 km north-east of Amini on the international trade route between the Persian Gulf countries and Sri-Lanka. The island is only about 3 km long and 594 m wide at the broadest point.

The climate is tropical. The Melacheris are the labor class of the island. Malayalam is the main language. Kiltan is fertile and thickly planted. Fisheries and coconut growing are the main occupation. During summer season, people sleep outside on the beaches in the cubicles made of cadjan leaves.

The island features rock layers, lime stones and shallow lagoons on the western side. There is a high storm beach on the northern and southern ends of the island. This is an ideal place for water sports. A light house is located at each end. The Dak Bungalow at Kiltan provides excellent accommodation facilities. The nearest airport is on the Agatti Island.
