Khatarua

Khatarua is a festival of the pastoral - agricultural society of Uttaranchal. It comes on the first day on the month of Aswin (mid September). It is celebrated to memorize the victory of king of Kumaon.

Bonfires called the ‘fire of Khatarua’ will be made during the celebration and children will hold colorful flags. Cucumbers will be thrown in to fire with a belief that it will destroy all the evils. Animals are given special care and are fed with fresh grass during the festival.
