Keerapalayam Village, a model village, is situated near Chidambaram

. This ancient village lies on the banks of Vellar River, a seasonal river formed by the intersection of Vasishta Nadi and Sweta Nadi. It is believed that during the ancient period, Vellar River separated the Chola
kingdoms and the Keerapalayam village had become a cross mark between the two kingdoms. In Tamil, the divider or cross mark between two rivers is called 'Keeral' and 'Palayam' specifies 'habitation.'
