Kavu

Miniature Rain Forests in Kerala

These sacred groves are small privately protected ancestral places of worship for the upper caste Hindu families of Kerala. The kavu is usually dedicated to snakes. There are groves dedicated to Lord Ayyappa as well. These groves with small ponds are veritable sanctuaries of flora and fauna. These are the homes of valuable medicinal plants, insects, and snakes and animals like fox.
