Karnataka Sandalwood Carving




Karnataka is renowned for its sandalwood carvings. In olden days, this art was used to make idols belonging to deities. Currently this art is employed in the making of accessories also. Apart from their beauty these artifacts produce a typical aroma which is a distinctive feature of the sandal wood.

The Gudigar community living in Sagar and Sorab regions of the Shimoga District specializes in this art. Trained right from the childhood, these artists produce idols and accessories such as penholders, cuff links, photo frames and paper clips. One of the famous products is the box containing delicate patterns engraved on it. The designs depict scenes derived from epics, and birds and animals.
