Karnam Malleswari

First Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.



Karnam Malleswari is famous as a weightlifter. She is the first ever Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. She was born in Andhra Pradesh in 1976. Malleswari participated in Sydney Olympics, 2000 and won bronze medal in the 69 kg category. She has won many championships including Istanbul World Championship (1994), Asian Championships (54 kg category) at Pusan and Korea (1995), and World Weightlifting Championship at Guangzhou, China (1995.)

Karnam Malleswari was awarded the prestigious ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award' in 1994-95.
