Kalinjar




Nestled in the heart of Bundelkhand, Kalinjar is a fortress city of Banda District. Covering an area of 25 sq km, it was formerly a hill shrine. Kalinjar is famous for the Kalinjar Fort, one of the eight famous forts built by Chandela kings.

This town was ruled by several dynasties such as Chandelas, Rajputs and the Solankis of Rewa. The fortress contains several temples, dating back to 3rd - 5th centuries. Neelkanth Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the noted one.

Rohan Kund, Sita Sej, Chauburji Darwaza, Alam Darwaza, Patal Ganga, Pandu Kund, Koti Tirth are other important places worth visiting.

Kalinjar is about 53 km south of Banda. The nearest railway station is at Atarra (36 km.) Civil Airport Khajuraho is the nearest airport.
