Kalighat Temple is located in the city of
Kolkata on the banks of the
river Hooghly. The city is said to have derived its present name from the word 'Kalighat.' The temple is devoted to the
Goddess Kali or
Shakti and is considered as one of the 52 Shakti Peethas of India.
There are many stories regarding the origin of the temple. Mentions are also there in Mansar Bhasan composed in the 15th century and in Kavi Kankan Chandi of the 17th century, which prove that the temple has a long tradition. The present form of the temple was erected by the Sabarna Roy Choudhurys, a famous Brahmin Zamindar family of Barisa village.
