Sri Kalahastiishwara Swami temple is situated in Uttamapalaiyam, a small town situated at 110 km from Madurai on the way to Kambam. It is said that one of the devotees here used to go to Kalahasti temple regularly. When he became old he was not able to go to Kalahasti. So the God of Kalahasti appeared in this village to bless him. Hence the place is called Dhakshina Kalahasti and Thenkalahasti. The temple also lodges some nice paintings belonging to Naayakkar dynasty.
