Kailash is the name of a Himalayan peak and the mountain range that encloses it. Mount Kailash, often called the King of Mountains, is situated in the Western region of Tibet, close to the Lake
. It has been recognized with Vaidyutaparvata and is respected as the abode of Lord Shiva
. The peak, 6,718 m high, is the tallest in the range.
This ancient and prominent sacred place of four religions, deeply embedded in South Asian myths, is however the least visited. A few thousand pilgrims from the Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon (Tibetan shamanism) religions is all that Kailash gets every year.
