Kadamba Dynasty




Kadamba Dynasty, founded by Mayurasharman, was established in the 2nd century AD. Mayurasharman experienced some humiliation at the Pallava capital and he gave up his hereditary priestly vacation, to revolt against the Pallavas. He crowned himself at Banavasi in Uttara Kannada District.

The Kadambas later branched into dynasties of Goa, Hanagal and Chandavar. In 6th century, they were thrown out of power by Pulakesi-II of the Badami Chalukyas. But the Kadambas made their presence felt till the 13th century.

During the rule of, Kakustha Varman, the great poet Kalidasa is believed to have visited his palace. Kadamba dynasty adopted Jainism during the reign of King Shivakoti. Numerous temples and educational institutions flourished during the reign of this dynasty.
