Ka Dur U Jumai

Image of the earthquake

Ka Dur U Jumai is located along the footpath from Syndai village to the Umpubon Bridge on the Jowai- Dawki road. The carving depicts a deity with a nose similar to the trunk of an elephant and the body of a man. The head is conical and one of its hands have only a single thumb.

It is believed that the earth-quake happens due to the movement of U Jumai's unique thumb. The image gives a clear view of the unwritten and unrecorded beliefs of the Jaintias of earlier centuries. Syndai is located in Jaintia Hills District, about 47 km from Jowai.
