Juroon Ceremony

Juroon is an important pre-wedding ceremony native to Assam. During this ceremony the groom’s mother gifts the bride with lots of presents. This ceremony is an exclusive women affair, though some men may be present.

A special canopy structure, called ‘morol,’ is built for the occasion using banana or mango leaves. On the day of the ceremony, the groom’s mother along with other female relatives visits the bride’s home. They are greeted by the bride’s mother, following which they are lead to the morol. The bride is summoned and asked to sit in front of the morol. She is gifted with presents by her future mother-in-law and other members of the groom’s family. The groom’s mother applies a ‘sindoor’ (vermillion powder) on the bride’s forehead while gifting her.
