Sakkarbaug Zoo



Junagadh Zoo, also known as Sakkarbaug Zoo, is situated at Sakar Bagh, in Junagadh District of Gujarat. Established in 1863, it is regarded as the oldest zoo in the state and the thirst oldest zoo in India. The zoo was set up to save Gir lions from extinction; Gir lions are held and bred in captivity at this zoo.

Junagadh Zoo is now home to more than 850 wild animals of 71 species. Major animal species found here include Asiatic Lion, Chinkara Gazelle Deer, Four-horned Antelope, Indian Wolf and Indian Wild Ass.

Based on its collection, area and number of visitors, the Central Zoo Authority of India has designated the Sakkarbaug Zoo as one of the 15 large and one of the 57 important zoos out of about more than 350 animal collections in India.

Junagadh Zoo is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 hrs.

Junagadh Junction Railway Station, on the Veraval-Rajkot railway line, is the nearest railhead.
