Jiban Kundu

The Spring of Life

Jiban Kundu is a holy hot spring situated at Bakreswar in Birbhum District. Legend has it that in ancient times, there lived a pious couple named Sarva and Charumati. Having no friends and relatives, they decided to forsake the world and went to the forests to worship God. But they got disappointed with the advent of a tiger that devoured the unhappy Sarva. Charumati, with great sorrow, prayed to Shiva to restore her husband. In accordance with the lord's instructions, she collected Sarva’s bones and went to the banks of this stream, Jiban Kundu, and immersed them in its waters. Thus she was delighted to see the mortal remains suddenly endowed with life.

Bakreswar can be reached by train from Howrah to Bolpur, and then by bus. It is about 229 km from Kolkata by bus. It is located about 80 km from Shantiniketan.
