Jaipur Column

Jaipur Column is a massive sandstone shaft of 145 ft, placed in the T-shaped forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, the official residence of the president of India. A bronze lotus raising a six-pointed crystal star can be found in its top. The structure got its name, as it was gifted to the British by the Maharaja Madhosingh of Jaipur.

A steel tube inside the column is a striking feature. It leads the lotus and the star to a concrete block in the foundation.

The column carries an inscription on its base, conceived by Lord Irwin and Sir Edwin Lutyens, which is as follows: In thought faith, In word wisdom, In deed courage, In life service, So may India be great.
