Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), located in New Delhi
, was established in 1985 with the aim to provide cost-effective, quality education to large sections of the population including those living in remote and far-flung areas. The University has been a pioneer in Distance Education and the recipient of the Centre of Excellence in Distance Education award conferred by the Commonwealth of Learning in 1993.
A Central University with 48 regional centers, 5 sub-regional centers and over 1133 study centers, spread throughout India, IGNOU has carved a niche for itself among the premier educational institutions in the country. Various academic programs leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees are offered. The university has established various schools such as school of computer and information sciences, humanities, sciences, education, social sciences, engineering and technology, continuing education, management studies and health sciences.
