Indian Institute of Technology Madras, established in 1959, is situated on Sardar Patel Road in
Chennai. This institute is flanked by Adyar, Taramani and Velachery villages and lies near Rajbhavan.
It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in 15 disciplines in engineering, sciences, humanities and management. It has got several departments and advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences. The institute has geared up a student exchange program, which permits the students of IIT Madras to visit institutions in Germany, Switzerland and a few other countries. As well, students from participating universities visit IIT Madras for specific course work or projects. The placement office of the institute engages in securing placements for students.
The campus is located midway between the Chennai International Airport and the Chennai Central Railway Station. It is around 14 km from the Central Railway station and the central bus depot.
