Hiyang Tanaba

Boat Race

Hiyang Tanaba is a striking water sport celebrated in Manipur. It is a game connected with religious rites. This traditional game is usually held in the month of November at Thangapat. Hiyang Tanaba is also conducted at the time of natural disaster.

Hiyang Hiren, a boat used in the race, is regarded as the symbol of spirituality. There is a belief among the Meiteis, a tribal community found in Imphal valley, that the worship of Hiyang Hiren would counteract the evil spirits. Rowers wear traditional dresses and head gears.
