Hari Parbat Hill

Hari Parbat is a hill set in the Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir. The hill is also called Predemna Peet or Kohi Maran.

According to myth, the hill was formed when Goddess Shakti took the form of a Hor (myna) and threw a pebble on the demon Tsand to crush him. It is said that this pebble grew into a mountain and she killed the demon at this place. Thus, this hill is sacred to the Hindus. The Sharika Devi Temple lies here.

The Hari Parbat Fort, built by Atta Mohammad Khan, is the main attraction of the hill. The outer wall of the fort was built by Akbar in 1590. There is a Makhdoom Sahib Shrine and the monastery of Akhun Malla Shah on the southern side of the hill.

The hill is of basaltic rock which is favorable for the growth of almond trees. One gets a charming view of the Dal Lake and a part of the valley from the hilltop. The best time to visit is during the April when the trees blossom. The eastern foothills were once the cantonment for the army. This place is protected with wall all round and a magnificent gate Kashtadwar.

The hill is easily accessible from Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi Railway Station and airport is Srinagar Airport.
