Gowreeswara Temple

Gowreeswara Temple is situated at Cherai in Ernakulam District. Also known as South Palani, the temple was built in 1912. It is dedicated to Lord Muruga. The idol was installed by Shri Narayana Guru, the great social reformer. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are also worshiped.

Cherai Pooram, the annual festival, includes shows of music and dance. The highlight is the trumpeting of more than 30 caparisoned elephants that line in a procession. The magical sound of panchavadyam and the spectacular view of celebratory fire works add the color of the festival.

Cherai is around 40 km from Ernakulam. Local buses ply frequently between Vypeen and Cherai. Ernakulam Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
