Godaveri

Also known as Godamuri, Godaveri is a folk play of quasi-religious nature. It is popular in the central parts of Kannur District. The dance is usually performed by the Malayan tribe. There is a large puppet of a cow made of the bracts of arecanut. A boy in girl's make-up, inside the puppet, is the main character of the performance. The boy is accompanied by a drummer and a number of men who wear fantastic masks and their bodies smeared with ashes. The dance is performed to the accompaniment of songs.
