Garo Language



Garo Language is used in the state of Meghalaya, especially in the East Garo Hills District and West Garo Hills District. Garo is also used in Kamrup District, Dhubri District, Goalpara District and the Darrang District of Assam, along the Brahmaputra valley. The Garo speakers are broadly divided into Achik, Abeng (Ambeng), Awe, Ruga and Atong groups. Achik is the standard dialect and has a well developed script. Ruga and Atong along with the Rabha, Tintekia Koch and Koch form a sub group within the Boro Garo group of languages. Abeng, Achik and Awe form another group.
