Gamti Tribe




Gamti is a sub group of the Bhils, mainly inhabiting areas in the district of Surat and Bharuch, in Gujarat. Gamti is the language spoken by the tribes. In Bhilali language, the word 'gamta' means 'headman'.

Agriculture is the main occupation of this tribe. Major cultivated crops include cotton and rice. Other areas of activity are hunting and fishing.

Gamtis live in small bamboo huts made with tiled roofs. Their custom allows cross cousin marriages. The members believe in non-human objects and ancestral worship.
