G Sankara Kurup




G Sankara Kurup, popularly known as Mahakavi G, was one of the foremost among the Malayalam poets. Born on 05 June 1901, at Naayattode near Kaladi,Sankara Kurup completed his education, and started his career as a Malayalam teacher in a secondary school Tiruvilwamala. He worked as Malayalam Pandit in Maharaja's College Ernakulam and retired as professor of Malayalam from the College in 1956.

Sahitya Academy Award on 1963, Jnanpith Award in 1965, and the Soviet and Nehru Award in 1967 are among his proud achievements. In 1968 he was nominated member of the Rajya Sabha and was awarded Padma Bhushan the same year. His publications include twenty-five collections of poems, four volumes of literary essays, four plays in verse and translations of 'Gitanjali' and 'Ekottarasati,' 'Rubaiyat,' 'Meghasandesam.'

He passed away on 02 February 1978, at the age of 77.
