Fortress of St Estevam

The fortress of St Estevam was built by the Portuguese in the village of St Estevam in Tiswadi. It was constructed with the main objective to protect the eastern and northern boundaries of the island of Jua. The island is at a short distance from Mapusa and Ponda. In the year 1683, Maharaja Sambhaji, a Maratha warrior, conquered the fort in the battle against Portuguese. The site is about 23 km from Panaji.
