Evening Bazaar

Evening Bazaar is nearly a century-old market located near the Central Station, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The market derived its name because traders, in the early years, set up shop only in the evenings. Evening Bazaar is also known as Paayi Kadai – this is because mats (called 'paayi' in Tamil) were sold here. The market is popular for stainless Steel, aluminium, brass vessels and furnishing material.

The historic importance of the market is that during the Second World War, aluminium vessels were supplied to the military forces from here. Also, in 1930’s hawkers frequented this market to buy vessels and sell it in villages and towns during temple festivals.

Evening Bazaar, in keeping with modern times, has introduced modern 'kitchen equipment' like steam boilers. The bazaar also has shops which offer furnishing material like draperies, pillow covers and carpets.
