Freedom Fighter, Publisher, Columnist, Speaker, and Cultural Activist



Dominic Chacko Kizhakkemuri, popularly known as D C Kizhakkemuri, was a megastar in Malayalam publishing. Born at Kanjirappally in Kottayam District in 1914, his was a multifaceted personality. After completing his education, Dominic started his career as a schoolteacher and worked in various schools for over a decade. In the company of K.J. Thomas, he started the Sahridaya Grandhasala which grew into one of the leading libraries in Kerala. Later he started the D C Books in 1975, which brought out an incredible 3,300 titles published till date.

Also a famous writer, he was the first newspaper columnist in Malayalam. He held positions as the vice-president of the State Library Council, and as the president of the Freedom Fighters Association and the Book Publishers Association of Kerala. Dominic Chacko Kizhakkemuri bagged several awards and recognitions, including the Swadeshabhimani Puraskaram, Distinguished Publishers Award, Veteran Publisher Award, and the Padmabhushan. D C Kizhakemury passed away on January 26, 1999.
