Dharmapureeswarar Temple




Dharmapureeswarar Temple is a Shiva Sthalam at Patteeswararm near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District. Built by Ko Chenkann Cholan, this temple contains inscriptions and sculptures that date back to the Chola period. Among them the important are the inscriptions that depict the fight between a lion and a warrior, the slaying of Hiranyakasipu, and the lifting of the Kailasa Parvatam by Ravana. Lord Shiva is temple deity referred to as Dharmapureeswarar. Goddess Vimalanayaki is also worshipped here. The theertham of this holy place is Soma theertham. Saint Appar has glorified this temple in his pathigams.
